Scott McCurry's Right On Target (Interview)

We found Scott's CD trolling through a bin at Target. We take chances on cute guys who play alternative rock. Scott was kind enough to answer a few questions for us about his music and the band, and how he got nationwide distribution... interested folks can most likely find him at Target, well his CD at least, or for more info visit him at www.scottmccurry.com

Short bio, say 100-200 words. We love ya but we're hectic, ya know.

I was born in Houston in 1983 and later moved to Dallas where I began gathering influence from 1960's rock icons such as The Beatles and the
Rolling Stones. Music has always been my passion.

I taught myself how to play the guitar and keyboard and bought my first guitar when I was 12. Since then, I've been in several bands and seriously writing music for the last six years. My previous band, The Koozies, released our first CD, "Seeing through bleu ink" in 2002, and sold over 3,000 copies. I'm currently attending Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX, and studying Business Communication and Spanish.

Your CD says you have a "new" sound... and also mentions some influences from the 60s. What's new about your sound, and how does what someone did in 1964 fit in to what you did in 2004?

I write songs that catch my ear and try to put an original touch to them. I am influenced by all sorts of music from all different time periods, so maybe what is new about my sound is that I mix writing and production techniques from long ago with more recent sounds.

In 1964, music began to truly develop into a remarkable art form. What bands or individual artists did back then was make remarkable songs using simple chord progressions, organic sounds, and lyrics that connected with people's everyday life. These simple ideas are what lead to the greatest music of all time, and when writing and recording I follow in this same direction, because if it were not for those bands I would have never picked up a guitar in the first place.

Does the band collaborate in the writing or arranging? and how?

I do most of the writing on my own, and nearly all the arranging with a little help from band members. On Like the Sun, I recorded 3 or 4 different rough drafts of each song on my computer. I would track each instrument for the song and then present it to the band as a foundation for their parts. On the upcoming album I will still do the writing, but will try to give the band a more active role in developing the songs.

How did you get involved with PTC Music, and how has the Distribution at Target helped your recognition?

PCTMusic www.ptcmusic.com is a group that helps independent artists achieve broad distribution of their CDs via non-traditional retail outlets such as drug /grocery/convenience stores, and mass-merchant and warehouse clubs. PCTMusic's goal is to provide the market with "pure" music that is unfiltered by the big labels and they saw my music as a good example of the kind of music they like to promote. They selected me for a group of artists they are promoting known as "America's Best Independent Artists" (ABIA).

The distribution at Target is helping me build a strong fan base all over the US! I've received several emails from people in many different states saying they picked up the "Like the Sun" CD and love it!

Sam's Club has just recently picked up the ABIA CDs and will be testing them in 50 stores in July. If all goes well, my CD will be in Sam's stores nationwide by August.

Pick a song or two that means a lot to you, and just tell us about
it, and what we can learn about "you" or "ourselves" from listening.

In the song "All over the Road," I try to portray a vivid account of a person coming to terms with losing someone. Whether it be a personal account or not, or whether the listener has experienced something of that nature, people can identify with the agony and hopelessness that occurs in such an event.

Anything else you can say to tempt someone to listen?

The music is simple but lively. Since I love all types of music, I write all types of music, and the album consists of a variety of songs that I think might stick in your head.
