Q&A with Cameron Ulrich, artistic director of Muddy Waters Theatre Company, based in the Theatre At St. John’s in St. Louis, MO

First, give us a brief history of your company.
Muddy Waters Theatre Company is St. Louis' newest theatre company headed by two theatre veterans, Patty Ulrich (MA Theatre 2001) and Cameron Ulrich (MFA Theatre 2001), with a desire to produce, provide theatre education, and train actors in stage combat. We are a professional, non-equity, Nonprofit Corporation with the potential for equity contracts. Each season will focus on the important theatrical voice of one playwright.
Why did you make the decision to focus on one writer a season, and how do you pick who to produce?
We highlight one playwright because so often audiences see a show without considering the playwright and their contribution to the process or the diversity of their work. By producing three productions by the same playwright, we hope to educate the community to that particular person's contribution to the art of theatre. We choose playwrights who present the audience with issues we feel are significant to today's society and our local community.

What kinds of things do you learn a lot about a particular writer after spending a year with their work?
We become familiar with that particular writer's voice and the social issues
that most concern them.
Who comprises your audience, generally speaking?
We seem to attracting a variety of people, from young artistic individuals
to senior citizens.
What would you say to lure in someone who hasn’t heard of you or the plays you’re putting on?
We provide a theatrical experience that they may not find anywhere else in town.
Muddy Waters also provides workshops in learning stage combat.
